Original-Issue Discount Bond
(OID)
A bond initially issued at a dollar price less
than par which qualifies for special treatment under federal tax law. Under
federal tax law for tax-exempt bonds, the difference between the issue price
and par value is treated as tax-exempt interest rather than capital gain.
Remarks:
Bond funds including mutual funds (open-end and closed-end, actively managed
and indexed), exchange-traded funds and unit investment trusts offer a
convenient and affordable way to invest in a diversified portfolio of bonds,
but a bond fund investment can differ from a bond investment in ways that
are important to understand.
