Savings bond for senior citizens

Bank Negara Malaysia will issue a syariah-based Merdeka 2008 Savings Bond valued at RM2bil on April 1 to encourage the saving habit among senior citizens.
 

 

Sale of the bonds, which mature in three years and offer a return of 5% per annum, will be from March 3 to 31.

The minimum investment in the bonds is RM1,000 and the maximum RM50,000 per investor, said the central bank in a statement yesterday. The bonds are available at all commercial banks, including Bank Islam, Bank Kerjasama Rakyat (M) Berhad, Bank Simpanan Nasional dan Bank Pertanian Malaysia. Allocation will be on a first-come, first-served basis.
